Name: desalinization
Acronym:
Description: Desalinization is the process of removing dissolved salts form sea water and brakish water to reduce the salinity to values similar to freshwater. It is accomplished through distillation or reverse osmosis. Distillation relies on boiling the water and using cooling water to condense the distillate. Reverse osmosis forces filtered sea water though a reverse osmosis membrane which removes approx. 45% of the water that has become freshwater and returns the other water to the sea. As of 2010 there were 7500 desalinization plants world wide. Their use is limited by the large energy requirements (3 Kwth of electricity for every gallon (38.8 liters) of desalinized water). Its most common application is for potable water in regions where oil is cheap.
