Name: flood control
Acronym:
Description: Flood control refers to the actions taken to reduce the effects of floods. These include raising the sides of river channels to reduce the likelihood of the river overflowing its banks, the construction of holding areas in the flood plans next to a river, restricting development on these floodplan areas to buildings that are used for recreational purposes and constructed in a way that minimizes the impacts of flood damage. For larger scale areas, flood walls and sea walls have also been constructed to reduce the impacts of flood and the intrusion of sea water in the case of storm surges along the coasts.
