Name: landslide
Acronym:
Description: Landslide – refers to the downhill movement of a significant amount of rock and soil (also referred to as a debris flow). These events generally occur when loose rock and soil become saturated with water and the frictional forces are no longer adequate to hold the material in place so it begins to accelerate downhill to a valley due to gravity. These landslides are often triggered by rains and start at the top of a small gully and grow as the mass of material moves downhill. Earth quakes can also trigger landslides hence seismically active regions are most at risk although they can occur anywhere. Their impacts include property damage and the death of humans.
